Marks on canvas are a direct expression of emotion. Understanding that compositions aren’t precious is integral to my practice. By exploring and peeling back layer upon layer, questions are raised, and solutions exposed, leaving behind a better view than one started with. I gain satisfaction from arranging strokes, like an open drawer full of dusty treasures waiting to be picked up and inspected.

Layered brushstrokes and a continuous reuse of materials define my pieces. A fascination of bodies intertwined, athletic abilities on display, sweat dripping from muscles slammed together by force is my current point of focus. The sensation of pleasure, the fear of letting go, the acknowledgement of being left behind. The relationship between people, in mind and body. Different forms of wrestling and dance poses inform my compositions. In a world of increasing tech dependency, there’s something hauntingly beautiful about skin to skin contact. The wildness of nature will always triumph. 

Being tall and feeling like an outsider as an athlete has always creeped into my practice. I paint large. I paint with oversized materials. I use my body as a tool, leaning into brushstrokes and the physical, exhausting practice of stretching one’s own canvas. 

I crave a physical practice both in making paintings and in the subject matter I choose to study.  Understanding both the immense athletic ability of the human body and the fragility of life is my truth and I’m seeking to learn more. Yet there is simplicity in being alone, understanding your importance and holding it. To me, an unbalanced state is true perfection.
